Outsmarting Google with a Google Voice in the Philippines

I'm sure you've heard about the Google Voice already. If you like the fact that you can call through Skype at such a low rate, then get ready to eat your heart out because Google Voice allows you to call for as low as $0.17! Super cool, huh?

So a friend decided to buy me a Google Voice invite from eBay but crap, I got a message telling me that it's not available in the Philippines yet!

Hold on, you know I believe in "We will find a way, or we will make one".

So I figured a way how to actually get an invite and get into the Google Voice System, or user-interface of it.

But wham! I still couldn't outsmart Google because I cannot add an international forwarding number :(

So anyway, here's my Google Voice Number. I know, I'm too cool, I got a UT funky number, haha.

(801) 810-7794

I will still need to wait until I could get an international forwarding number, or I dunno, what matters is that I'm on the first level of "fooling" Google. lol

If there's anyone who has bypassed more than this level, let me know. If you're curious as to how it was done, just ask me in the comments section and I will surely let you know. :)

The Struggles and Obstacles in Blogging

Blogging is fun yet it can be a little stressful at times. You wanted to write as often as you want but simply don't have ample time to sit in your computer to type them fast and click on that "Publish" button right away.

If you always struggle with the outburst of ideas but not being able to get your ideas organized in a way that your readers would easily understand, then you are not alone. Here are my struggles and obstacles in blogging. Yes, I managed to create simple solutions to overcome them too.

Too Much Ideas, Too Much Obstacles

There are bazillion of ideas in my mind right now about what should I post. However, they are all equally important that I ended up trying to make a summary of all of them, or simply to give a list of all of them. I wanted so badly to write about all of them for the past few weeks but still fail to do so because I had so much fun things to write about yet I have too much on my plate at this time that's baffling me from getting them weaved into a post. Now I feel like Bloggista who wants to write a lot, calls it his passion, yet fail to update his community as often as he'd desire to.

Frequently Consulted Blogs on Investing and Make Money through Blogging

I have been thinking about writing about my passion for investing. Or at least my interest about the subject. So I ended up reading posts about it instead. I specifically fell in love with AkosiAllanFitzVillafuerte and MillionaireActs. When I'm not on my blog, these three are usually my tambayan since PinoyMoneyTalk has not been updating regularly lately. These are all very informative blogs when it comes to investing and making money both online and offline. The previous blogs were a little more business-like but Bloggista's more casual and cozy that it's more than a blog but a community.

Wanna Be Successful? Get a Mentor

I must have read almost half of Penelope Trunk's post since she started that blog. I have been so hooked into her thoughts that I consider her my mentor. I talk about her both online and offline that I ended up adding her on Facebook. If reading all the links to her blog, the people that she's associated with would be considered stalking, then I'd probably be her greatest stalker. She probably must have gotten her tongue bitten in many occasions just because I seem to talk about her ideas to almost anyone in almost any topic. Not that she has all the answers to all my questions, but I just love her thoughts on various things. Parenting, careers, life in general, including sex. Not that I like all the topics but I like just how real she is when discussing these sensitive matters.

It all started with how her hating with Tim Ferris has helped her manage her time. During that time, I badly wanted to manage my time, and Tim Ferris is well known for his 4-hour-work-week. It's simply working 4 hours per week. Sounds like everybody's dream come true, eh?

Yet Penelope Trunk hates him for it. It got me intrigued so I read on.

Then I started hating Tim too. Well, not really.

I consider her my mentor and "consults" her by reading her posts about issues that I got myself on. When she said that being sarcastic is for poor minded, I automatically stopped from being one. I was really glad when one day she stopped by my blog and left a comment on my post about 3 Sure Ways to Make Money with Your Blog.

Look at the comments sections, she's the only one who left one.

I felt like the 3-year-old-Justin-Bieber fan who eventually saw him after her mom posted a video of her crying for JB.

2. Brother Jerry See

I have several other mentors and they're all local. All of them, except for Bo Sanchez, are very close to me. The first ever mentor that I had was Brother Jerry See. He's a simple watchman, or well, he repairs watches so I figure that's how I would call him. He's indeed more like a watchman. (Remember the stories in the Bible about a watchman in the tower who would warn the people when a danger is fast approaching? Bro. Jerry was so much like that to me.) He'd always give me advices as to how to deal with failures, walk while limping and seeing the world in as a whole blessing in her three-and-a-half view. You might be wondering why three-and-a-half. I call most people with glasses as four-eyed. His right eye is almost half open thus 3 and 1/2.

3. Mitos Aguadera

I know, her last name sounds like ABS-CBN's telenovela princess, Agua.

She's as kind, supportive and sweet so probably that's why. Mitos would always encourage me every time I would feel down every day. I would return the favor by giving her 3 Snow Bear candies every day. We would both never fail in our duties.

She tells me stories about how we should not give up on ourselves as God wouldn't give up on us. She told me about stories of The Shoe Box and the Bag (the differences between men and women's mind set), Are You a Camel in a Cage and would give me assurance that God's will be done on His own due time.

4. Bo Sanchez

I would probably be eternally indebted to Bo Sanchez for introducing me to Stock Market Investing through this post. It was so inspiring that I must have read all the introductory information about the topic in just one day. I must have been the informed novice in stock market that day. I clicked from one link to another until I learned about the potentials of investing in that said option than the usual time deposit or saving in the banks. I already have both so I thought I'd check out on the endless income and growth possibilities that the stock market would bless my life.

What's Worse Than Having No Idea

What's worse than enemies? Fake friends...everyone has one!

That's a catchy status from my Facebook friend. Then I realized what most bloggers must have been going through. Every day we are faced with a challenge to keep our readers hooked to our blog by posting an interesting and relevant topic to your niche. It should be like everyday is your last post, and the best are often saved for last, right?

Yet every day is not always a rainy day.

Sometimes some bloggers ran out of ideas.

Not for me!

Perhaps it's worse when you have bazillion of ideas running in your mind but you simply just don't have the time to post them all.

Blues Clues in My Notepad

I keep a notepad to keep all my ideas so I could just pull that single and magical thing when I get some time to actually publish them.

They're just bulleted points, or titles.

I wonder how do most bloggers or writers do it, but I start with titles then thousands of ideas will sprout from it.

So here's a list of topics that I badly wanted to write about. Let me know which ones you badly want to read about.

1. Ruining Relationships Through Being So Sensitive
2. Why I Don't Have a Boyfriend...Yet
3. The Best Investment Tip for Young People
4. Guests Are Like Fishes
5. What Are You Gonna Do With P20.00?
6. Compensating Lost Opportunities
7. Here's Why I Love Bo Sanchez and Penelope Trunk
8. Are You a Camel in a Cage?
9. Why Some Quality Posts Are Not Getting Quality Comments

I could have thought of the tenth idea so it could have looked like a complete list but I purposely didn't. I have done myself a favor of publishing it instead.

You are actually reading the 10th idea.

Though I may be struggling with time management and consistency when it comes to blogging, I thought I could compensate it with actually posting.

What about you, what are your blogging weaknesses?

Do you often get distracted?

Did you just started blogging?

If you've been blogging for quite sometime, what words of wisdom would you share to the newbies? And yes, I would exhort you to subscribe to my RSS feeds because I am sure those topics will eventually get published someday...

I know, I could be more specific, but I can't be too specific. I must under promise and over deliver. And yes, follow me on Twitter as I always do my followers a favor of being the first people to know when I publish an article.

What about you?

What are your blogging obstacles and struggles?

How do you overcome them?

Au Pair Scams: Beware and Be Aware!

If you are a Filipina and would like to be an au pair in the UK, save all your resources and efforts and find a host family in Switzerland or Norway instead because the Philippine government has long issued their warning about fake online jobs or emails coming from au pair scammers who pretend to be host families from UK. If in any case you've received any of the letters which I will be posting below, feel free to leave a comment of warning for many other au pairs.

Since I have long been blogging about the modus operandi of the au pair scammers, some of them might have been using different emails instead of the old ones but the content of their email would surely be similar if not the same to this from Nicole Edwards, the au pair scammer.

Please, do not send any money to anyone especially through Western Union because I am sure you will NEVER hear from these people again after you did!

Below are the new batch of au pair scam emails I got for the past 3 weeks. I have literally accumulated a database of au pair scams! haha

Thanks to Yahoo's generous mail storage capacity, I was able to save all of their fancy emails.

Most of these au pair email scams start with the salutation:

1. Dear Au Pai
2. Hello
3. Hi Au Pair

You might be wondering why. Simply because they've been email blasting and they just don't have much time to put the names of their prospective victims individually. It's funny that sometimes these au pair scammers are having some kind of identity crisis because their email addresses and names are often conflicting. Sometimes the receiver is not even you!

Read on and see for yourself. I purposely didn't edit their format so you will see that they were poorly drafted and written.

Dear Au pair,
We are a cheerful, friendly family in Cambridge , England. We have two
happy and affectionate kids, Jasmine (3) and Aidan (4) who attend the
local school between 9 and 3.00 every day. Jasmine likes playing with
trains, drawing, playing on the computer and garden swing, and riding
his bike. Aidan wants to be a scientist when he grows up, and enjoys
playing with Lego, art, reading comics, riding around on his scooter
and playing with his new Nintendo Wii.
We live in a very large modern family house with six bedrooms, three
bathrooms, and beautiful views of the River Cam, in a popular
family-friendly village right by Cambridge (15-20 minutes cycling
ride). We are an hour away from London on the train (75km), and there
is a mainline station direct to London in our village. We are also on
the main bus routes. Dad works as a senior accountant for for the
Greater London Authority, and Mum is a university lecturer in
Cambridge . We love walking and swimming, cooking for friends, going
on little trips with the children, and cycling.
Description of tasks:
We are looking for someone to get the children ready in the morning,
prepare and clear up the family's breakfast at about 7.30am, make the
beds, and take the children to school,
which is about a 1.5km walk away. The au pair would then need to pick
them up at 3.00 and look after them until we get home. We might ask
the au pair to babysit 1-2 evenings a
week.We have a really great cleaner, so there wouldn't be any heavy
housework. There is a bit of light cleaning and laundry which would
take about 90 minutes a day  in total.
There would be plenty of time free in the day to go to language
school, and there are a lot of good ones in the area.We will encourage
and assist you to find suitable English classes
(such as Cambridge Certificate) or other courses that you might be
interested in so you feel that while you stay with us you develop and
progress with your skills and education.
Living arrangements:

Dear Aupair,

We are a cheerful, friendly family in Cambridge , England. We have two happy and affectionate kids, Jasmine (6) and Aidan (10) who attend the local school between 9 and 3.00 every day. Jasmine likes playing with trains, drawing, playing on the computer and garden swing, and riding his bike. Aidan wants to be a scientist when he grows up, and enjoys playing with Lego, art, reading comics, riding around on his scooter and playing with his new Nintendo Wii. We live in a very large modern family house with six bedrooms, three bathrooms, and beautiful views of the River Cam, in a popular family-friendly village right by Cambridge (15-20 minutes cycling ride). We are an hour away from London on the
train (75km), and there is a mainline station direct to London in our village. We are also on the main bus routes. Dad works as a senior accountant for for the Greater London Authority, and Mum is a university lecturer in Cambridge . We love walking and swimming, cooking for friends, going on little trips with the children, and cycling.

 Description of tasks:

We are looking for someone to get the children ready in the morning, prepare and clear up the family's breakfast at about 7.30am, make the beds, and take the children to school,
which is about a 1.5km walk away. The au pair would then need to pick them up at 3.00 and look after them until we get home. We might ask the au pair to babysit 1-2 evenings a
week.We have a really great cleaner, so there wouldn't be any heavy housework. There is a bit of light cleaning and laundry which would take about 90 minutes a day  in total.

There would be plenty of time free in the day to go to language school, and there are a lot of good ones in the area.We will encourage and assist you to find suitable english classes
(such as Cambridge Certificate) or other courses that you might be interested in so you feel that while you stay with us you develop and progress with your skills and education.

 Living arrangements:

The au pair would have her own room, which is huge, and has a double bed, with sitting area and TV/DVD/Video/Hifi. There is wireless broadband internet in the house. It has a
lovely view of Ely Cathedral to the North out of the big window. You can even use one of our cars all weekend! Also 2 weeks are paid holiday during Christmas/New Year plus

Do not easily believe in these au pair scammers. The au pair visa for Filipinos to go to UK has long been abolished since November 26, 2008. You could might as well find a host family in Switzerland because the Philippine government has lifted their ban for au pairs in the said country.

If you have received any of these emails or similar to them and you suspect that they are au pair scam emails, feel free to comment below and warn others.

Do you find the post informative, fun and helpful? Then what about buying me a drink?

Slow Internet Connection? Hack Your Way to Faster Browsing with Google DNS!

For the past three days, my internet connection has been acting really weird aside from the usual slow connection. Every time I run the Speed Test program, I would get speed values that are actually higher than the allotted value for my internet plan.

I decided there must be something wrong with Meagan (my laptop).

Perhaps switching to Windows 7 has made her more vulnerable to viruses, malwares, spywares and any other malicious, infectious and dangerous softwares.

Infected with Malware/Adware/Spyware?
With a few selected sites inaccessible to both my Google Chrome and Firefox browser, I suspected my connection must have been hijacked by some Malware because before that, I was browsing a supplier's site and I got a warning that it was dangerous to access the said site but I kept browsing anyway.

Well, here's a tip:
Don't trust your anti-virus too much. Or don't let it over work.
Sometimes there are new viruses lurking in the internet lately that has not been identified in its Virus Signature bank thus it cannot easily detect or fight it. Once you're warned not to browse specific websites, DON'T! I have been so comfortable and I trusted my Norton Internet and AntiVirus Security 2010 that I ended switching over to ESET Node AntiVirus then to Kaspersky then to Norton again because I got so pissed that it wasn't able to fight away the Malware.
Be careful not to install any AntiSpyware or AntiAdware programs that are usually rogue softwares. These are programs that actually malwares. They deceive the users into installing them with the hope that they would ger rid of the virus when the truth is they are actually about to install but another virus!
Pinging the Site
I have learned in high school that every time a site is down, you will need to Ping it. So I run the Command Prompt by typing cmd in the search bar and the black screen appeared. You know the one that you usually get to see in banks that still uses the old fashion banking, only boring black screens because they're still on DOS mode? So I typed in:
ping www.applybuilder.com
Then it returns with

Request time out.
When you server is working just fine, it will return with some numerical value indicating the speed but this time it says time out. Like when we were playing "Tagu-taguan" with my neighbors and we would always say "tympers" or "time out" when we're tired. My internet connection can NOT be tired! How am I supposed to finish all my blog posts? Or how am I supposed to post my tweets, or read Penelope Trunk's blog? I just had so much worries that I spent the whole night trying to fix it.

Uninstalling Web Browsers
I almost gave up, but I'm not a quitter!
I tried un-installing Google Chrome, then Firefox.

But that didn't fix it.
I've read that resetting the Winsock will fix it since I am running on Windows 7.
That still didn't fix it!

Using Google Public DNS

Then I've learned about Google Public DNS: My Hero! Since most website that you're typing on the address bar gets translated into numbers through DNS, it is important that your ISP's DNS should not be clogged or it'll have a hard time returning the value of the site that you want to view. This means slow response to your request.

It's like ordering kare kare in Italy then the cook would need some Filipino waiter(DNS) to translate what in th world the word means and that's when the Italian cook will return with kare kare to you.

Of course that's a silly example, but I guess that's a little simpler than the explanation Wikipedia gives, haha.

In this case, I am replacing my ISP's DNS setting to that of Google Public DNS.
Here's how to configure your Google Public DNS setting. Be sure to look at your OS and version because each Operation System and version have different settings.

And here's a relatively fun and easy tutorial on how to configure your DNS setting to that of Google's for Windows 7.

Meagan is Well Now!
That fixed it, I just needed a much more unclogged DNS setting and Meagan (my laptop) is working better than good now. You should try Open DNS or Google DNS so you could enjoy much faster and safer browsing! And yes, I could access all the sites now. It wasn't malware after all.

Manny Villar's Aggressive Marketing vs. Noynoy Aquino's Effective Marketing

I'm not the type of person who likes to post my thoughts on politics and this perhaps is my first and last post regarding this topic. I just got a little bothered with the election results that it got me thinking. How on earth did Manny Villar lost to Noynoy Aquino? What will happen to the Philippines? Could we expect a better governance when all we have now is a puppet of many businessmen and politicians?

I used to really admire Manny Villar. When I was in fourth grade in elementary, I clutched his printed ad in the form of comic strip which tells a rags to riches story. (Here's similar one of my own, just in case you're interested). The story started with him carrying pails of fishes that he would then deliver to her mom in the market. He studied and worked at the same time. His story was really inspiring especially to working students that I really held on to it. Until recently, I read write ups about him telling that he's not really as poor as he claimed and that his family was in the middle class. The discovery shattered all my faith and admiration in him.

Now here's what I think are the factors that made him lost to Noynoy Aquino.

Too Aggressive Isn't Effective

The only time in the history of the Philippine television when I hate TV commercials the most is during the time when election is fast approaching. There's too little time for the program and too much time spent on the various ads "paid for by the friends of [candidate])".

Even if most products do not really live to their promises as long as the marketing is done right, people would still buy it mainly because they like what they saw, read or heard.

I remember when Chiara Guillergan-Caballes, whose father partly owns the Deco's Lapaz Batchoy fastfood chains here in Iloilo (and continually expands in other parts of the Philippines and hopefully in LA soon), told me how Mang Inasal, a leading chicken fastfood chain here in Iloilo, uses tarpaulins, TV ads and radio ads to promote their products and they could greatly attribute their success to marketing.

Remember when Google Wave was about to be released? Millions of people thought it's gonna change how communication would work only to realize that it was overrated. It's a recent example of how an effective marketing has uplifted a product.

Manny Villar paid billions of pesos just to create heaven-could-only-count TV political ads. There were so many of them that people got annoyed with it instead of voting him. Personally, the political ads added to my dismay with Villar because he looked so desperate to get the post of the President that he's willing to spend almost all of his fortune just to win the race. It only gave the Filipinos an impression that he will then take away those funds from the government's budget once he gets the position. He has made a wrong marketing move.

Below is a video of Manny Pacquiao (King of Boxing), Dolphy (King of Philippine Comedy), Willie Revillame (King of Noontime Shows), thus making a dubbed 3 Kings Support Manny Villar.

Many people believe that Revillame only added to the many liabilities that helped decrease Manny Villar's survey popularity.

And here's the most talked about commercial that actually inspired many parodies. He still claims that he's part of the poor people from Tondo but when asked if he indeed bathe in the sea filled with garbage, he simply smiled and responded with, "No". Perhaps the ad was a question which he actually need to answer.

Other candidates' political ads were simpler.

One of the most striking was that of Liberal Party candidate, and now the President of the Philippines, Noynoy Aquino, "Di Ka Nag-iisa", showcasing all the artists and celebrities that are supporting Noynoy Aquino, whose sister, Kris Aquino-Yap, is an established celebrity in the Philippines.

Kris Aquino, next to Sharon Cuneta, is the nation's most trusted endorser (or so the say). She's got the most commercial and TV shows in ABS-CBN because it's too obvious that the said station loves the Aquinos.

If you could remember during the Marcos regime, Ferdinand Marcos took down all the businesses that were against him or hampering his operations and it happen that ABS-CBN was one of them. He shut down all the media and broadcasting companies.

The Lopezes were a little maimed then.

It was when Cory Aquino took over to the Presidency that the  media got granted with their freedom of speech again. The Lopezes are forever grateful to the Aquinos and many other politicians that helped them regain their right to broadcast. It's probably one of the many reasons why we're seeing too many Kris Aquino soap operas, programs and why she's too overrated.

I remember my IELTS Speaking Exam so well when the guy who interviewed me asked me about the celebrities I know here in the Philippines whom I think really deserves their fame. Then he asked me if I think Kris Aquino is talented. I responded quickly with a no. Then he added that Kris is simply overrated and the whole interview revolved around the topic of Kris Aquino being so overrated and the show business, ABS-CBN in particular, is so stupid for keeping talentless people like her.

Even if a lot of people are annoyed with Kris Aquino's maarte and taklesa character, it's still saddening that equally a lot of people trust her. We can't deny that another great portion of Noynoy's vote came from Kris' connections in the show business. Below is a star-studded political ad for Noynoy. I gotta admit it was an effective marketing.

It was really touching.
It was really striking.
And I gotta say it worked!
Because well, Noynoy won.

Noynoy's way of reaching out to the people was done emotionally.
Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro reached out intellectually.
Manuel "Manny" Villar reached out financially.
Bro. Eddie Villanueva reached out spiritually.
Dick Gordon reached out socially.

Scandals and Black Propaganda

It's too bad that Manny Villar has got too many black propaganda casted upon him. Too many issues were laid in the table such as the C-5 Scandal, land grabbing, being too greedy and many others while they only happen to give Noynoy an issue of being autistic. Bro. Eddie Villanueva didn't get too much support from his own denomination because people hold on to the thought that the state should be separated from the church. Dick Gordon was a so-so candidate. He is good, but he doesn't have a celebrity sister and the sympathy of the people. Gibo Teodoro is probably the most unfortunate among all because he didn't get the chance to have the credit that he deserves. People hate the current administration and just because he's there, people hate him automatically even if a lot of professionals believe in his political ideas.

You see, it's all about effective marketing!

I don't know what will Manny do after this. I hope he has learned his lesson. He said he doesn't ran out of options. Of course, he's a businessman who would always stand up after falling. Or maybe, "maliligo nalang dagat ng basura" or "magpapasko sa kalsada" or "magnenegosyo nalang kasi gusto kong yumaman pa".

Now I don't wanna sound like anti-Manny Villar because I am NOT. I used to admire him in a business sense. I am not an pro-Aquino, either. I do not like the idea of having a puppet government.

I am just a simple Filipino citizen who believes that there's still hope for our country if the leaders would think more of the people who voted for them's issues and not their personal hidden agenda because after all, it's not what they've done in the past that matters, it's what they can do for future that matters!
